PNR Status



Indian Railways began its service on 16th April 1853 when it ran its first passenger train from Mumbai to Thane covering a distance of 33 kilometres. Since then it had not looked back and achieved many milestones and have emerged as world’s second largest and Asia’s largest rail network operated under single management. Indian Railways operationalize 12,617 Trains to carry more than 23 million passengers on a daily basis which interestingly is equivalent to entire population of Australia.

It is serving the passengers through its large network of 7172 stations across the country and have more than 59713 passenger coaches and in excess of 9549 locomotives to meet the ever increasing demand of rail commuters in the country. Besides this Indian Railways also run in excess of 7421 freight trains accommodating 3 million tonnes of freight every day. Indian Railways is in the selected club along with Russia, China and USA with freight carrying capacity of more than one billion tonnes annually by operationalizing 239,281 freight wagons.


It is building world’s highest railway bridge – five times the height of QutubMinar and even taller than Eiffel tower by 35 meters It is built on Chenab river and is on the Udhampur-Srinagar- BaramulhaRail Link Road.

Indian Railways have the distinction of having four “World Heritage Sites” declared by UNESCO. These includes Darjeeling Himalyan Railway inscribed in 1991, Mumbai CS Building declared in 2004, Neelgiri Mountain Railways Included in 2005 and Kalka- Shimla Railways was honoured in 2008. Indian Railways is also the seventh largest employer in the world with employee strength of 1.4 million.

PNR is the abbreviation of “Passenger Name Record”. It is 10 digit number that is recorded in the Indian Railways Computer Reservation System and which saves the journey details of the passenger in super computer.
